My 2025 Montgomery Kidney Walk and Celebration Fundraising Page

Melissa Peak

Melissa Peak

Hello all,

I am working on the Montgomery County Commission Kidney Lovers team once again for the Alabama Kidney Foundation's (AKF) annual Kidney Walk fundraiser.  My dear friends and close family members have been impacted by kidney issues.  My grandfather was a WWII Naval Air Veteran, who later in life endured kidney failure and had to undergo dialysis three days a week for several years.  Even though I was a child when I witnessed him go through this, I remember how hard it was on his body and even more so how difficult it was for my mother and grandmother to care for him.

As I am writing this, I just received word that a fairly young friend and colleague (mid-late 40's) with a family is at UAB in ICU in full kidney failure, fighting for his life.

This is also a cause that I am supporting in association with the Montgomery County Commission in Memory of the late Chairman of the County Commission, Elton Dean, Sr.

2025 is the 50-year anniversary of the founding of the AKF.  Please join us in our commitment to the AKF by making a tax deductible donation to our Kidney Lovers team.  All of the funds raise from the Montgomery Kidney Walk will be used to support kidney patients in all 22 counties within the AKF's Middle Alabama Region.  The AKF will mail your thank you tax letter as soon as we receive your donation.  When you give to the Kidney Walk, you can feel secure that the AKF will manage your gift in the same spirit it was given, for those in need in our communities!

If you have any questions, you can contact our Team Captain, Loretta Burns, at LorettaBurns@montgomerycountyal.gov or call/text 334-782-0384, or contact AKF Regional Director Shannon Morrell at shannon@alkidney.org or call/text 334-430-8716.

Here are a few facts about the Alabama Kidney Foundation and the needs of the local patients:
  • Alabama Ranks #1 per capital in the nation for kidney failure.
  • Over 400k Alabamians are currently living with kidney disease.
  • Over 14k Alabamians require multiple weekly dialysis treatments to survive.
  • The AKF is state-based, meaning all donations stay local to the region.
  • The AKF is the ONLY Alabama resource for financial and other assistance for kidney patients.
